2010 marks Chopin's 200th birthday, and there are a number of events worldwide celebrating the occasion. In Edmonton the Polish Culture Society is presenting or sponsoring a number of events, and I noticed an interesting pairing of performers for events on Sunday and Monday.

From the blog "Things you wouldn't know if we didn't blog incessantly" (TYWKIWDBI) comes a BBC documentary entitled "The Story of Bohemian Rhapsody"

I've watched the first bit so far and it seems pretty interesting. If you want to know more about one of the most popular pieces of music ever, check it out!

Today the always reliably entertaining mental floss blog explores 8 unusual instruments, like the Tromboon:

The tromboon is an instrument that combines the reed and mouthpiece of a bassoon and the body of  trombone. The word has become a slang term meaning a mashup that combines the worst qualities of two disparate things.

Via Proper Discord, a possible companion piece to Peter Gabriel's Scratch My Back album: opera star Renée Fleming's upcoming album Dark Hope covers music by Muse, Death Cab for Cutie, Arcade Fire, and Peter Gabriel (among others). You can read all about it here, or even download the first single from iTunes.

Now, in the spirit of Peter Gabriel's concept, I'd like to see Death Cab for Cutie cover one of Renée's signature arias...

It has been some time since the last blog post, but you may notice that we have a new website, and we're now hosting the blog on the site, rather than on the external blog page. If you subscribe to the blog, you may have noticed old postings reappearing in your feed, a result of transferring over to our new home. I'm looking forward to writing more posts, and I'm going to re-start with a follow-up to a post from October, about Peter Gabriel's album Scratch My Back - a completely orchestral and vocal album covering other artists' works.

Somehow I missed the release of this back in February, so I finally gave it a listen today. I'm not going to give a full album review, as there are many out there already, but I will say that it's always interesting to see how pop/rock musicians use the orchestral idiom, and I appreciate that this album goes there fully - no relying on drums or guitars. The mixed reviews from Peter Gabriel fans seem to say that this is actually a detriment, but perhaps that's more a reflection of expectations than anything.

Unfortunately, many of the artists Gabriel covers in the album have not yet returned the favour, which was the intended consequence.
