Grades 4 - 6

The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra’s Education Programs offer unique, varied and interactive learning opportunities about music for students of all ages. All programs align with Alberta Provincial Education Standards. Performances are one hour in length with no intermission.

Alberta: Songs of Our Land

Aboriginal communities of Alberta, from First Nations to Métis to Inuit, use music to depict the land and legends that define their cultures. A strong relationship to the land has also inspired some of music's greatest works, including Dvorak's New World Symphony. Following the Alberta Social Studies Curriculum, this concert combines classical masterpieces with traditional music from across the province to inspire respect for our land and encourage identity and belonging within Alberta.

Adopt-A-Player

Give your students the opportunity to create and perform their own musical work when they “adopt” an ESO musician. Together with the music teacher, the musician guides students through the development of creating and performing an original piece of music.

Adopt-a-Player begins in January and ends with two Sharing Concerts on the Winspear Centre Stage. Your class can participate in this program free of charge. We select 10 schools every year.

Sharing Concerts: Sunday, April 29, 2012 at 1:30 pm & 4:30 pm

The teacher and musician collaborate to direct student learning:

  • to discover and develop skills and abilities
  • to encourage creativity
  • to consider linking disciplines: music, art, drama, language, movement
  • to compose an original work
  • to rehearse and facilitate the group performance

Thanks to the generous financial support from the Winspear Centre and Edmonton Symphony Orchestra donors, each year ten schools benefit from this innovative program at no cost.

Selection Criteria & Considerations

  • teachers must be willing to commit time and expertise to the program, and work in partnership with the musician
  • school administrator and staff endorsement is an asset
  • schedule flexibility is very helpful
  • student participants must be registered for an Education Concert
  • students are expected to participate in the Sharing Concert
  • maximum group size is 32 students
