Andrew Reid, 2010/11 Young Composer

andrew reidAndrew Reid’s journey in composition began at six years old with piano lessons. He quickly discovered his ability to play familiar songs solely by ear. A few years later, Andrew began composing and recording music for the films he was making.
 
Now a Grade 12 student at Edmonton Christian High School, his portfolio includes compositions ranging from piano to full orchestral pieces. Not only has he recorded his work on CD’s, but he has also played for live audiences.
 
“Composing is more than something I really enjoy,” says Andrew. “It’s my greatest aspiration in life.”
 
After graduation, Andrew plans to take his Music Diploma at Grant MacEwan University. He then hopes to attend Berklee School of Music in Boston to pursue his ultimate dream ― composing for films.

Andrew's piece will be premiered at Symphony Under the Sky on September 5, 2011.

Young Composers Project

Encourage aspiring composers to apply for this rare opportunity. One high school student will:

  • receive a $1000 bursary towards post-secondary studies
  • participate in a mentorship with established, local composer Allan Gilliland
  • compose a new work
  • hear it performed by the ESO for more than 2,000 patrons at Symphony Under the Sky 2012.
