Divas bewitch the Winspear for a “Wicked” evening with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra

Winspear Centre
2011-12 Robbins Pops

For opening night of the season, stars Julia Murney and Stephanie J. Block of the Tony-award winning Broadway hit Wicked join the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra for a spellbinding evening of popular hits.

New York Pops Music Director Steven Reineke guest leads the first Pops concert of the ESO’s 60th anniversary season with crowd favourites from Chicago, Ragtime, Titanic, The Phantom of the Opera and, of course, Wicked

“Basically the focus is on strong “diva” women through the years — Broadway, opera, popular music and film,” said Reineke in an interview with BWW. “For example, selections from Gypsy and Carmen, as well as Liza Minelli, Gloria Estefan, Barbara Streisand and Celine Dion.”

Making their debut with the ESO, Julia and Stephanie will sing beloved pieces such as “All That Jazz” from Chicago, “I Could Have Danced All Night” from My Fair Lady, “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic and “Defying Gravity” from Wicked.

Symphony 101 offers an introduction to ESO programs this season

What’s the difference between a symphony and a concerto?

When do I clap?

Why is everything in Italian?

Hey, even Yo-Yo Ma asked those questions once upon a time. The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra is pleased to offer Symphony 101. It’s designed for those who wish to enhance their symphony-going experience, just by understanding what it’s all about.

Hosted by ESO Music Resource D.T. Baker, Symphony 101 goes back to the basics. In a lively and fun session, get some background as to what all that information on a symphony program actually means. Bach was Baroque, and Berlioz a Romantic – so what? This is your chance to find out. With musical excerpts from the ESO’s 2011/2012 season, Symphony 101 will be interactive as well as informative. Feel free to ask the questions you might have been too shy to ask before.

The most exciting talent to emerge in decades returns to the Winspear with unrelenting vigour

Cameron Carpenter

The ESO Presents

Fired by an uncompromising musical intelligence and seemingly super-human technical facility, organist Cameron Carpenter is changing the game of his instrument. This force of nature returns to the Francis Winspear Centre for Music for another breathtaking performance with your Edmonton Symphony Orchestra on May 6. Performing works by Cole Porter and Gershwin under the direction of William Eddins, plus the North American premiere of his own work, Cameron Carpenter will also defy the mainstream and challenge all preconceptions of organ music in a solo recital following intermission.
