The ESO Education Concerts take students across Alberta
This season’s Grades 4-6 ESO and Lehigh Hanson Education Concerts, Alberta: Songs of our Land, combine classical masterpieces with traditional music from across the province to inspire respect for the land and encourage identity and belonging within Alberta.
Created and led by Enbridge Resident Conductor Lucas Waldin, the concert will explore the Aboriginal communities of Alberta, from First Nations to Métis to Intuit, using music to depict the land and legends that define their cultures.
Fiddlers from Prince Charles School, Enoch Cree singers, Métis child jiggers and musical prodigy and fiddler Calvin Vollrath all take the stage to give students a unique and authentic experience.
Students will hear and see traditional jigs, songs and dances – Men’s Grass Dance, Red River Jig – while still taking in timeless pieces inspired by a strong relationship to the land, including Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony, Copland’s Hoe-Down and ESO Resident Conductor Robert Rival’s The Great Northern Diver.
Registered schools received program notes and classroom activities tied to the Alberta Social Studies Curriculum designed to enhance the experience. One activity encourages students to write and submit a poem for the chance to have it read on stage during the concert.
Committed to education, the ESO presents Education Concerts and programs to over 30,000 students every season. The next Education Concerts of the 2011-12 season, Canadian Road Trip, take place on April 24, 25 and May 1 for Grades K-3.
