Robbins Pops
Your Edmonton Symphony Orchestra opens its 2010-2011 Midweek Classics and Robbins Pops series with one of the world’s most exciting trumpet soloists, Jens Lindemann. Led by Resident Conductor Lucas Waldin on September 15th and legendary pops maestro Bruce Hangen on September 17th & 18th, the ESO performs a whirlwind of extraordinary music with the always entertaining trumpeter at the Francis Winspear Centre for Music.
Recently hailed as the "International Brass Personality of the Year" by Brass Herald, Jens Lindemann kicks off the ESO’s 59th season with a number of special guests. In what is known to be one of the most difficult pieces there is for trumpet, Mr. Lindemann performs Bach’s brilliantly scored Second Brandenburg Concerto in F Major with Interim Concertmaster Eric Buchmann (violin), Teresa Hron (recorder), and Principal Oboe Lidia Khaner.
The spectacular evening of baroque brass will have ESO Principal Trumpet Robin Doyon performing with his former teacher in Vivaldi’s remarkably flashy and fanfare-like Concerto for Two Trumpets, and Lucas Waldin conducting his own arrangement of Purcell’s famous Chacony. Soprano Megan Chartrand, members of Òran chorus, and Assistant Principal Trumpet William Dimmer also appear as guest artists in this concert program.
In our first Robbins Pops program of the season, audiences will be treated to the world premiere of Allan Gilliland's Dreaming of the Masters III and the Canadian premiere of Jay Chattaway's Shenandoah Fantasy, both written specifically for Jens. Holst’s "Jupiter" (from The Planets), Debussy’s Clair de lune, a tribute to John Williams, highlights from Leigh’s Man of La Mancha and so much more will be heard in the weekend performances.
Don’t miss one of the most celebrated soloists in his instrument's history!
Thank you to our generous supporters of the Robbins Pops series, Bill & Mary Jo Robbins, and to Enbridge for their support of our Resident Conductor Program.
The ESO commission of Dreaming of the Masters III is possible thanks to the support of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.
