“Pathétique” Symphony

Master orchestrator and composer Gustav Mahler fused movements from two Bach suites into a romantic orchestral suite. It is matched with Tchaikovsky’s passionate, anguished final symphony, the “Pathétique,” and the beautiful organ concerto of Francis Poulenc.

An afternoon of musical treasures - from orchestral masterworks by Mussorgsky and Wagner to irresistible music with solo instruments and orchestra by Chopin, Tchaikovsky, and Prokofiev. Korean pianist Dasol Kim (“a refined artistry of incredible maturity” to his performances -  North Germany Review) makes his ESO debut playing two extroverted showpieces, and the ESO's own Rafael Hoekman performs Tchaikovsky's romantic variations a courtly theme.

No orchestral colour will be left unexplored in this exciting matinée concert, as two works featuring the majestic Davis Concert Organ contrast with lively showcases for violin and oboe. Taiwanese violinist Yu-Chien (Benny) Tseng won the highest prize in the 2015 International Tchaikovsky Competition. Allan Gilliland's whimsical Oboe Concerto is an expression of movement from the Baroque to the 21st Century.

It makes a suitably powerful conclusion to the 2016/2017 Masters series and is joined by works from two of the ESO’s former Composers in Residence, including a brand new Trumpet Concerto by John Estacio.
